Addressing students of Yale Univerisity, Connecticut on Saturday, Lady Gaga (whose real name is Stefani Germanotta) admitted that she came extremely close to quitting her job, her passion, because she felt she was being used as a “money making machine”.
The 29-year-old singer and actress who was speaking on behalf of the Emotion Revolution project to university students revealed that the shiny façade of dresses made out of meat and multiple Kermit the Frogs was merely masking how “overworked” she was. She later went on to share that the way she learnt to love the society that she lives in was by coming to terms that she needed to put her own happiness before her career, before worrying about how much profit she was bringing in.
The blonde beauty, who now seems to wear a constant smile on her face, told the crowd that she has “had to make decisions. Okay, Stefani, Gaga, hybrid-person. Why are you unhappy? Why is it that you wanted to quit music years ago?” Gaga also said that, not only did she start to lose the passion and drive that she once had for her position, but the overwhelming mass of work was having a huge effect on her mental self, too, shown when she said “I feel sad when I’m overworked, and that I just become a money making machine, and that my passion and creativity take a back seat.”
Shortly after, she reassured the audience that she wasn’t planning on going anywhere soon, claiming that she started to feel more comfortable in her position when she started declining participation in events that were based solely on profit, for example tiring days of signings and selfies. She said that, after giving up these time consuming and heavy affairs, “slowly and surely, I remembered who I am.”
The newfound actress in FX’s alternative TV series ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ told the Yale students of her everyday battles with anxiety and depression, which truly emphasised the strain that was put on her during her moments of weakness, when she nearly felt the need to quit the music industry.
She was sure to leave some lasting advice with the members of the audience, when she announced that “no matter how much success you have, no matter how many opportunities, fame, fortune – no matter how many people accept you, to your face, the person that really needs to accept you is you.”, proving the strong influence that her own happiness now has on what she is doing in her career.
